Total Number of JP Domain Name Registration Reaches 700,000, Making .JP the Most Popular ccTLD in Asia

- Japanese JP Names Exceed 100,000, and CO.JP Shows Excellent Performance with 270,000 Registrations -

(8 June 2005)

On June 1, 2005, JPRS announced the accumulated total of registered JP domain name as of June 1, 2005 exceeded 700,000, reaching 724,233. As a result, .JP has got a No.1 ranking among all ccTLDs in Asia, and 7th among the 248 ccTLDs worldwide. (Research by JPRS)

According to a breakdown of these 724,233 names, the number of General-Use JP Domain Name in the form of "EXAMPLE.JP" is 388,552 (ASCII domain name: 281,200; and Japanese JP Domain Name: 107,352.) And the number of Organizational/Geographic Type JP Domain Name such as "EXAMPLE.CO.JP" and "EXAMPLE.NE.JP" is 335,681.

In particular, the number of Japanese JP domain names registered in the month of May was 22,995, which marked the highest number registration earned in a single month (except the number recorded during the first period of Japanese .JP registration between February and May, 2001).

As a result, the number of registered Japanese .JP exceeded 100,000 for the first time, and it now accounts for 28% of General-Use JP Domain Name and 15% of JP Domain Name as a whole. It is considered that the reason for this increase is Japanese companies and individuals' active use of Japanese JP Domain Name in various fields; for example, "明治製菓.JP" (MEIJI SEIKA KAISHA, LTD.) and "小野伸二. JP" (Shinji Ono). Moreover, General-Use JP Domain Name in ASCII is very widely used, and the number of overall General-Use JP Domain Name has reached 380,000 within just over four years since the service started in February, 2001.

In addition, the number of Organizational/Geographic Type JP Domain Name such as "EXAMPLE.CO.JP" and "EXAMPLE.NE.JP" is increasing steadily. It has now increased to 335,681 from 238,519 in February, 2001, which is an increase by nearly 100,000 within just over four years. The number of registered "CO.JP" names shows particularly good performance. It has increased by more than 80,000 from 192,097 to 273,574.

JPRS considers that there are three facts which have contributed to this big leap in the number of General-Use JP Domain Name (both ASCII and Japanese) and "CO.JP." Firstly, many companies set up their corporate websites using "CO.JP" domain names. Secondly, it is becoming more common to operate different websites for each product and service using multiple General-Use JP names (e.g. in the case of Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd., they have a corporate web site: http://www.fujifilm.co.jp/ and a product/services site: http://fujifilm.jp/). And finally, more and more individuals are opening up their websites with unique JP domain names.
